Surrogacy is a practice involving the carrying of pregnancy for the involved intended parents. The practice has only gotten known and popular in the modern times. But, going back to the past, there were already so many occurrences and records that involve surrogacy. Researches and development of this method have long been started. Obtained records show that the earliest occurrence concerning this method happened during the 1930s. At present, the knowledge and practice of surrogacy method led to different issues. It is useful for parents or people who wish to have a child, but are unable due to certain reasons. And, it is an issue for others who do not agree with the method.

Surrogacy Information: What is Surrogacy?

It is the agreement that involves the surrogate, who serves as the party to carry a pregnancy and the intended parents, the one who wishes to have a child and become parents. As part of surrogacy information, there are 2 primary types of the method. The first is gestational surrogacy with traditional surrogacy as the second.

  • Gestational Surrogacy – It is the type of surrogacy in which pregnancy happens through the transfer of the embryo, with the use of IVF method. In this type, the resulting child is not related to the chosen surrogate. It is also known as gestational carrier.
  • Traditional Surrogacy – The chosen surrogate is impregnated either artificially or naturally. But, in either of these, the resulting child always has a relation to the surrogate genetically.

In these two, gestational surrogacy is the most practiced and common. It is also the less complex of the two when it comes to the legal aspects. In history, the first actual surrogacy took place in 1985. It was when a woman has successfully carried a gestational surrogate pregnancy.

Other Types of Surrogacy

  • Gestational Surrogacy & Egg Donation or GS/ED

The same process as gestational surrogacy is done to impregnate the surrogate. However, instead of using the sperm and egg of the intended parents, only the sperm of the intended father is used. And, the egg comes from a donor. Thus, the resulting child is only genetically related to the intended father, but still unrelated to the chosen surrogate.

  • Gestational Surrogacy & Donor Sperm or GS/DS

The surrogate is impregnated in the same process as gestational surrogacy. But, the egg comes from the intended mother and a sperm donor. The resulting child is only genetically related to the intended mother.

  • Gestational Surrogacy & Donor Embryo or GS/DE

The surrogate is impregnated through inseminating the donor embryos. Donor embryos commonly come from couples who have undergone the IVF process as well and have left over embryos which they choose to donate. Hence, the resulting child is both genetically related to the intended parents and surrogate.

  • Traditional Surrogacy & Donor Sperm

In this part of the surrogacy information, the surrogate is being inseminated with the donor sperm through an artificial method. The methods can be IVF, home insemination or IUI. Thus, the resulting child is genetically related to the chosen surrogate and genetically unrelated to intended parent(s).

The development of surrogacy process instantly led to different issues from many aspects. However, surrogacy still serves as the answer for couples and people who wish to have a child, but cannot.
